Selective suspension of single layer graphene mechanochemically exfoliated from carbon nanofibres

This paper presents the first report of the successful ball-milling exfoliation of graphitic filaments (GANF® carbon nanofibres) into single layer graphene. The addition of small amounts of solvent during the milling process makes it possible to enhance the intercalation of the exfoliating agent (melamine) between the graphene layers, thus promoting exceptional exfoliation. Advantage has also been taken of the fact that the Hansen solubility parameters of graphene are different from those of carbon fibres, which allows single and few-layer graphene to be suspended in a particular solvent, thus discriminating them from poorly exfoliated carbon nanofibres

Physically Cross-Linked Hydrogel Based on Phenyl-1,3,5-triazine: 2 Soft Scaffold with Aggregation-Induced Emission

A phenyltriazine compound has been used for the first time as a monomer in the construction of a hydrogel. This physically cross-linked soft material showed blue fluorescence when excited under UV-light. Polymer formation and intermolecular H-bonds arising from triazine moieties operate as aggregation-induced emission (AIE) mechanisms. The combination of soft materials and AIE properties expands the applications of these materials. Química orgánica general en problemas. Manual para la resolución de ejercicios de síntesis orgánica

Este texto propone una aproximación sencilla a los esquemas de pensamiento (estrategia) y algunas pistas (táctica) para abordar síntesis de moléculas. No se trata de un manual de análisis retrosintético sino de una herramienta que aúne distintos conocimientos distribuidos en un programa de Química orgánica general que ayuden a contemplar la disciplina como un todo interconectado, con más análisis y menos memoria. Según se avanza en el manual se irán retomando estrategias y tácticas que se entremezclan con los ejercicios propios del capítulo; en conjunto se explican 160 síntesis. Finalmente se ejemplificarán síntesis más complejas, dentro de los límites de este texto. Hay un capítulo 7 donde se indica cómo poder solucionar los 103 ejercicios propuestos a lo largo del texto

EuChemS reconoce el primer Historical Landmark en España: las Minas de Almadén

The Mines of Almaden have been awarded the EuChemS Historical Landmarks Award, european level, in recognition of the role they played in the history of chemistry and european sense of belonging between people and ideas. Almadén, which was recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2012, is located in the province of Ciudad Real (Castilla-La Mancha). Almadén is a typical example of a historic mining site producing mercury. These mines have an essential role in the history of humanity, from ancient times up to the present day.Las Minas de Almadén han sido distinguidas con el premio a nivel europeo EuChemS Landmark en reconocimiento al papel que desempeñaron en la historia de la química y el espíritu europeo de identificación entre las personas y las ideas. Almadén está situada al suroeste de la provincia de Ciudad Real (Castilla-La Mancha). Almadén, que fue reconocido como Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 2012, es un ejemplo típico de sitio minero histórico que produce mercurio. Estas minas tienen un papel esencial en la historia de la humanidad, desde la antigüedad hasta la actualidad

Polymer immobilization of bis(oxazoline) ligands using dendrimers as cross-linkers

Homopolymers of bis(oxazoline) ligands can be used to prepare efficient catalysts for cyclopropanation reactions. However, the low accessibility to most bis(oxazoline) moieties leads to a low copper loading. As a consequence, the transmission of chiral information from the complexed polymer is not very efficient and only a few chiral cyclopropane molecules are obtained from each molecule of chiral ligand. The use of suitable dendrimers as cross-linkers in the polymerization process allows better copper functionalization. As a consequence the productivity of chiral cyclopropanes per molecule of chiral ligand greatly increases, which improves the ligand economy and the chirality transfer. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd.
